There’s an old joke about a pianist playing out of tune at a concert. The conductor stops him mid-performance: ‘You’re playing all the wrong notes.’ The indignant pianist replies that he’s playing all the right notes. Just not necessarily in the right order. Clearly, there are times when individual creative expression is best parked.
Architectural lighting is, thanks to Zambelis, one area where creative vision is lent full voice, its fluency enabled by the Greek lighting specialists’ Alphabet collection of supremely configurable, super-graphic modular components. With an emphasis on ever-changeable, flexible systems that include plug-and-play elements – plus a website that functions as a planning tool – the writing’s on the wall. And the ceiling.

An alphabet is a toolbox for creativity, providing the basic building blocks for all written texts. When arranged in certain ways, the letters or symbols contained in an alphabet can be used to tell stories, communicate ideas and record significant events for posterity.

Greek lighting company Zambelis has developed its own alphabet of linear downlights and track lighting systems that can combine in almost limitless configurations to create bespoke lighting solutions. The modular products are named after letters in the Greek alphabet and are available in various lengths, widths and configurations to suit any space.

The firm has also created a website that uses parametric principles to configure the Alphabet products. It’s like a spelling guide to help customers arrange the components in the best possible way. As Zambelis explains: ‘we are a project-oriented company and our website is the key to customise our products.’

Visitors to the site first select the product style (Alpha, Gamma, Kappa, Zeta etc.) that best suits their requirements. They can then configure the design by specifying properties including the dimensions, colour temperature, diffuser type, driver and body colour. When they’re done, the website generates a unique description code and datasheet with technical information about the products.

Architects and designers looking to use their Alphabet lighting system in a project can download CAD files to add to technical drawings or presentations. This allows them to visualise products in a space and show clients how the final design might look. Just to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Covering all angles: ALPHABET by ZAMBELIS
ALPHABET BY ZAMBELIS’s TAF24 luminaire system can easily switch between horizontal and vertical configurations, offering scope to planners for creating sculptural lighting effects.

Many of the best toys consist of modular pieces that can be arranged in almost limitless ways. Most of us can recall building castles, animals or racetracks from colourful bricks or simple components. The freedom these toys offer fires the imagination and allows creative minds to express themselves.
Modularity is also a desirable quality in other products, providing opportunities for personal expression. Like all the best modular designs, Alphabet’s latest lighting system TAF24 offers a huge range of aesthetic and functional possibilities. It can be customised to fit any room and provides a versatile option for lighting offices, libraries, display units or other interior spaces.

TAF24 is a minimal, modular system featuring simple tubes that can be specified with strip lighting or integrated spotlights. The extruded aluminium tubes have a diameter of just 24mm and come in several lengths. By choosing from different colours, shapes and light sources, architects, designers and planners can build bespoke illuminated installations.
The TAF24 units are suitable for suspension, wall mounting or spanning spaces between walls. Corner sections allow the tubes to form right angles in any direction, so the system can go round corners or be used to create sculptural shapes. They can even switch between horizontal and vertical configurations to add height and drama. With so many options to choose from, designers can unleash their own creativity and create lighting systems that are both functional and decorative.
The click trick: ALPHABET by ZAMBELIS
ALPHABET BY ZAMBELIS’s EPSILON52 Magnetic range can be complemented with magnetic spotlights to create bespoke lighting installations in offices, libraries and museums, as well as in retail and residential spaces.

It’s hard to know for sure why designers are consistently drawn to using magnets when creating innovative products. Let’s be frank, the ability to create a bond between two objects without a visible joint is a wonderful gift of science, so it’s no surprise that many products requiring impermanent fastenings use magnetism to provide this functionality.

The Alphabet collection from lighting brand Zambelis is all about modularity and enabling components to combine in different ways. Its EPSILON52 Magnetic range comprises 52mm aluminium profiles with integrated light sources that can be arranged in almost limitless configurations. The lighting system can also be supplemented by magnetically attaching spotlights anywhere along their lengths. The plug-and-play spotlights can easily be removed and repositioned whenever required.
As with other products in the Alphabet collection, the components are named after letters of the Greek alphabet. Each letter denotes the product’s defining functional characteristic: Alpha 52 is a pendant providing linear diffused light, Gama 52 is a LED pendant with optional added spotlights. Kappa 52 incorporates cylindrical spotlights for direct illumination, and Zeta 52 features an array of surface-mounted LEDs along its length.

The 52mm profiles can be used by interior architects or designers to create bespoke installations in offices, libraries and museums, as well as retail or residential settings. The versatile system is easy to customise using the parametric configuration tool on Alphabet’s website, with the additional magnetic spotlights offering enhanced functionality whilst maintaining the design’s minimalist aesthetic.
